Prof. El Barbary at the 1st Saudi HypoLearn Iteration, King’s College Hospital London, Jeddah — September 2025
When specialist surgeons from across the Arab world gathered in Jeddah in September 2025 for the first dedicated hypospadias simulation course in Saudi Arabia, the faculty list included one name from Cairo: Prof. Mohamed El Barbary, Professor of Paediatric Surgery at Cairo University (Kasr Al-Ainy) and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd).
The 1st Saudi HypoLearn Iteration — Hypospadias Hands-On Simulation Course and Symposium — took place on 9–11 September 2025 at King’s College Hospital London, Jeddah. Organised jointly with the Hypospadias International Society and accredited for 14 CME hours, this three-day event brought together leading paediatric and urological surgeons to teach, discuss, and advance the management of hypospadias in the region.
Prof. El Barbary was not in attendance as a guest. He was invited as faculty — one of a select group of surgeons trusted by the international organising committee to teach others.
A Named Technique Presented on the International Stage
His contribution went beyond hands-on instruction. Prof. El Barbary delivered a formal scientific lecture titled:
“Wingless TIP: Rethinking Glanular Closure in Distal Hypospadias”

The Wingless TIP is a surgical approach Prof. El Barbary has developed and refined through years of clinical practice and peer-reviewed research, including published work in the African Journal of Urology. The technique addresses glanular closure in distal penile hypospadias — one of the most technically sensitive steps in hypospadias repair — with a focus on reducing complications such as fistula formation and wound breakdown while achieving a natural cosmetic result.

Presenting original surgical research at a CME-accredited international symposium, in front of a specialist audience at a facility bearing the King’s College Hospital London name, represents a meaningful form of peer validation — the kind that matters to both the medical community and the families who rely on it.
Hands-On Teaching: Guiding the Next Generation of Surgeons
The HypoLearn format combines symposium lectures with hands-on simulation sessions. Using 3D anatomical models designed to replicate the hypospadiac penis at infant scale, trainee surgeons practise the technical steps of repair under direct supervision from experienced faculty.

Prof. El Barbary led these simulation sessions — working one-on-one with trainees at the bench, guiding their hands through the operative steps, correcting technique in real time. This is teaching at its most direct: not a lecture, but a transfer of skill.

Formally Recognised by the Organising Committee
The three-day event concluded with a formal recognition ceremony. Prof. El Barbary was presented with both a certificate of faculty participation and a gold star award by the Saudi organising committee — in the presence of a representative of King’s College Hospital London.

What This Means for Families Seeking the Right Surgeon
For parents researching surgeons for hypospadias repair — whether in Egypt or travelling from the Gulf — one of the most reliable signals is peer recognition: does this surgeon’s expertise stand up to scrutiny from other specialists in the same field?
An invitation to teach at an internationally affiliated, Hypospadias International Society–partnered simulation course is precisely that kind of signal. It is not a marketing award. It is a group of specialist surgeons saying: this person knows what they are doing, and we want our trainees to learn from them.
